Bone Spurs

Spinal bone spurs are a natural process of aging and most people will not even know they have one until it causes problems or is discovered on an unrelated X-ray. Hearing that you have a bone spur in your neck may be a scary thought for you as your first thought may be of a rough edged object, such as a spur on a cowboy boot. To think that something like this may be in your neck causing you pain and discomfort could be a disturbing thought. Let us put your mind at ease, a lumbar or cervical bone spur is not at all sharp, and is actually quite smooth.

In fact, the bone spur on the spine is not actually the cause of your pain. A cervical bone spur may exist for quite some time before it actually begins to cause pain. A bone spur in the neck will begin to present with painful and neurological symptoms when it comes in contact with a nearby nerve exiting in the spinal canal.

Bone Spur on the Spine – Symptoms

The most commonly seen symptoms of a spinal bone spur are:

  • Dull aching pain in the neck or lower back
  • Pain that radiates into the shoulder or buttocks and down the arm or leg
  • Numbness and tingling to in the arms or legs
  • Weakness in the arms or legs
