About Myelopathy

Myelopathy is an injury to the spinal cord that results in usually irreversible damage. That is why it is imperative to prevent the progression of myelopathy. During our lifetime we only have one brain and one spinal cord and there are no replacement parts. Once a spinal cord becomes damaged, it is unable to repair itself. Usually with damage to the spinal cord one gets some bleeding at the junction of the white/ gray matter junction of the spinal cord. This subsequently results in myelomalacia or softening of the spinal cord and then eventually atrophy or wasting of the spinal cord. When these events occur they become irreversible. This can result in pain or paralysis.
