Lifting Weights

There are four types of exercise – cardio, core strengthening, flexibility and weight training. Weight training is a common type of strength training where the goal is to develop increased strength and size of your skeletal muscles. This type of exercise usually involves lifting of weights. By using a weight against the force of gravity one may stimulate a concentric or eccentric contraction of the muscle to strengthen that muscle. These exercises are designed to increase physical strength.

In order to get maximum outcome one should:

  • Employ proper technique
  • Proper warm-up
  • Proper breathing
  • Hydration
  • Carefully plan sets and reps
  • Avoid injury by avoiding pain

The difference between free weights and weight machines:

  • Free weights are non-constraining, may be used in various positions and require the use of stabilizer muscles
  • Weight machines are restrictive, enforce better form and may prevent injury

Overall, the benefits of weight training include increased muscle mass,  strength, endurance, bone formation and a whole host of metabolic benefits for overall health.
