Preventing Abuse of the Spine
Neck and back pain are very common, with over 90% of the population being affected at some time in their lives. With over 30 years of experience as an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in spine care; I have seen the progression from a lack of spinal care providers to the current overabundance. With this excess of providers, there has also come overtreatment. So how do we limit this “abuse of the spine” or overtreatment and allow for you, the patient to get the right dose of treatment.
Here are a few simple guidelines I follow:
- Never exaggerate the risks of conservative care
- Never underestimate the risks of surgery
- Never overestimate the benefits of surgery
- Never advocate surgery that we would not chose for ourselves
If your providers can’t follow these simple “do the right thing” guidelines/ principles, then I would suggest getting a second opinion.
