What are the Different Types of Fusion Procedures?
ALIF (Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion) procedure grants access to the spine from the front (abdomen), while a TLIF (Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion) or PLIF (Posterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion) grants the surgeon access to the spine from the posterior. XLIF (extreme Lateral Interbody Fusion) is performed while the patient is laying on their side, giving the surgeon access to the disc from the side. Different approaches allow the surgeon to correct different conditions.
